Hi there, I’m Katy! Mal and I met in 2018 when we were in a production of the musical “Annie” in Columbus, OH, and became fast friends. I stole the show with my one line, “Soap—no, bubbles, I think!”
Here I am with Mal and my two daughters (who are now 11 and 14!) posing after one of our shows. Fun fact: Mal’s mom was my daughters’ elementary school counselor, and we’re also friends. I love reading MCM every Monday and am honored to offer this week’s PalCrush. Here we go!
The format:
What I’m crushing (accomplishing, achieving, attaining, fulfilling, something that I am being successful at.)
What is crushing me (see definition 3b, something that is bringing me down.)
What I’m crushing on (admiring, adoring, appreciating, cherishing, favoriting, etc.)
What I’m crushing
Having music be an important part of my life. I stepped back from doing clinical work as a marriage and family therapist about 3.5 years ago, and since then, I’ve started a small business (Katy Oberle Creative) providing creative mindfulness programming to individuals, groups, and organizations. One of the services I provide through KOC is creating commissioned “Handmade Songs” for special occasions. I’ve also released original music and sound baths that you can listen to on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Also, I’ve been lucky enough to perform in a few musicals since “Annie”, and I also have a part-time job singing, playing guitar, and providing sound baths to cancer patients and their families through OhioHealth. Finally, I just found out last week that I was awarded the $1200 I applied for through the Greater Columbus Arts Council, so I can cover the recording costs of creating a new EP (mini-album) of original songs later this year!
What’s crushing me
The logistics of being a working mom with a working hubby and two busy girls (ages 11 and 14). I feel like there’s not enough time in the week to accomplish all that I want for my career, to clean the house, to grocery shop, to mow the lawn, to do laundry, to take the girls to rehearsals and appointments, and to work out (even with an incredibly helpful and supportive spouse who also does A LOT for our family). I am very thankful for our “village,” which includes my mom, my in-laws, and amazing friends. I’m writing this at 8:08 pm on Sunday, even though Mallory asked for it to be emailed to her by 8. Life at this stage is just plain crazy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Ok, maybe I’d have it come with more money, but other than that… ;)
What I’m crushing on
Our family spent part of Spring Break week in NYC seeing Broadway shows. It was EPIC. I am completely crushing on Sunset Boulevard. It’s a revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, starring Nicole Scherzinger (Elder Millennials reading this, you may remember her as the front-woman of the early 2000s girl pop group “Pussycat Dolls”). She was iconic as Norma Desmond, and the actor who played Tom Gillis was phenomenal too; both of them played the roles in the West End production before taking it to Broadway. My girls and I have all been listening to the cast album nonstop. If you can’t get to NYC before June to see the show, I encourage you to watch this live performance of her singing the most famous song from the show, “As If We Never Said Goodbye”, on Late Night with Stephen Colbert.
Thanks for hanging out with me for a few minutes, and thanks again to Mal for inviting me to write this PalCrush edition!
Go forth and crush your week, friends! We’ve got this :)
