Hello subscribers of MCM. Surprise it’s actually a PCM! I'm Liv! Roommate (and friend (Pal)) of Mal. It's an interesting story about how we came to be roommates. I was living in Boston when I decided I needed to move to Denver in February 2021. My college roommate Emma (you know her, you love her, you read about her in MCM often!) had a room that would be ready for me in August. Sometime in between February and August Emma calls me up and says, "another girl from UMass is going to move in and will be there when you get here. Her name is Mallory." I was excited, I knew this girl. I let Emma know and she let me know, "no you don't." Yes, I do! She was in our rival comedy group. She's got curly hair and a killer knack for improv. We are acquaintances!!! Turns out, I was right. It was the same bitch!! I was excited. I admired her on stage and I admire her in the regular everyday life. Anyway, Mal and I are friends now. We have many things in common such as being silly and having glasses and very curly hair.
The format:
What I’m crushing (accomplishing, achieving, attaining, fulfilling, something that I am being successful at.)
What is crushing me (see definition 3b, something that is bringing me down.)
What I’m crushing on (admiring, adoring, appreciating, cherishing, favoriting, etc.)
What I’m crushing
Deadlines, baby! To be honest, I was 50/50 on whether to categorize this under "what's crushing me." After some soul-searching, though, I've concluded that I absolutely crushed those deadlines!
I'm kicking off my career as a UX designer, wrapping up my bootcamp while actively job hunting in the field. I'm thoroughly enjoying every aspect of it. Design is the intersection of art and science that I have been seeking.
Adhering to deadlines was a personal challenge that I've grappled with for what feels like forever. Throughout high school and college, I convinced myself that I thrived under tight deadlines. However, this didn't translate to setting earlier deadlines for myself; instead, it meant waiting until the last minute to complete projects.
I was determined to change this pattern with this class, and I have! I now create timelines for myself and diligently follow the design process. I'm determined to stick to them.
But something happened the other night…
Let me paint a picture for you. I was dog-sitting for my aunt, who'd given me very specific instructions to learn how to use her Ooni Pizza Oven so I could teach her upon her return. I invited my wonderful girlfriend, Laura, and Emma (see the intro) over to make pizzas on Thursday. I felt confident about meeting my first major deadline the following Monday. Emma and Laura planned to stay for a work-from-home day on Friday, and I was thrilled about it. It promised to be a productive day working with my favorite people, and by day's end, I would have completed my project two days ahead of the deadline!
That was until I reviewed what was due and discovered that I had completely misinterpreted something and I was missing a huge chunk of the project. I was devastated and disappointed in myself. It felt like a mistake I would have made back in college. So, I dove into work at 9 am and didn't stop until 2… am. I did nearly the same thing the following day, as well as on Sunday, and halfway through Monday... I finally finished!
For a few days, I couldn't shake my disappointment for making a mistake that seemed reminiscent of my college self. However, when I received positive feedback from my mentor, it dawned on me—perhaps I had been too hard on myself? College Liv wouldn't have been nearly as far along on the project initially, and there's no way she could have produced work of this caliber! And for that reason, this belongs in the "crushing" section of PCM.
Anyway I’m super responsible now and am really good at making deadlines so if you, or anyone you know is hiring a UX designer HMU :-).
What’s crushing me
House sitting! I took an extended gig in the burbs and I am not ready to be a suburban girl that’s for sure! I miss the hustle and bustle of the city and I miss my friends and roommates. The dogs are cute and the pizza is good tho.
What I’m crushing on
Roxborough State Park! Laura and I went there this weekend and met a park ranger named Bob. He provided us with a sheet featuring pictures from the early 1900s showcasing various rock formations in the park. We had to locate these features along the trail and then mark their positions on a map.
It was a blast! We managed to fit in a hike, and the experience of trying to match everything on the map was incredibly enjoyable. The park isn't far from Denver and offers an accessible hike suitable for individuals of all ages.
